Juliana of Liège

Juliana of Liège
(1192–1258)
   Mystic and Saint.
Juliana was orphaned at an early age and grew up in the Convent of Mont Corrillon, near Liège, France. She experienced mystical visions which led her to devote herself to the establishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi. She met with considerable opposition, but, through the support of the Archbishop of Liège, the feast was proclaimed in 1246. However, once Juliana lost her patron, the festival was not celebrated again during her lifetime and she herself was forced into exile, first near Namur and later at Fosses. Pope Urban IV reinstated the feast in 1264. It commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and in the Western Church it is celebrated on the first Thursday after Trinity Sunday. Juliana was canonised in 1869.
